A downtown ice cream shop run over the summer by a group of young female entrepreneurs raised $1,716.13 for Moose Jaw Transition House.

The Good Scoop operated out of Tara's Commodities, located at 31 Main Street North, during the months of July, August, and September.

The ice cream shop was run by ten young female entrepreneurs, who were looking to make some money over the summer while also helping out a good cause. All of the net profits were donated to Transition House.

The venture was run similarly to Junior Achievement, in that it operated as a non-profit while also giving back to the community. Students taking part were from Vanier Collegiate, Central Collegiate, A.E. Peacock Collegiate, King George Elementary School, and online learning.

In addition to ice cream, The Good Scoop also sold student-made merchandise such as keychains, t-shirts, hoodies, hats, and tote bags.

"It was a lot of work but an incredible learning experience and we are glad to be making a donation to such a good cause," said founder Jakson McAuley.

The girls presented a cheque to the non-profit organization on Wednesday.

"It was a ton of fun, lots of hard work, and we just wanted to be able to have the Transition House be able to help a couple more people," added co-founder Madi Marktanner.

In total, 79 pails of ice cream were sold over the summer with the ten students working a total of 868 hours.

For eight of the girls, this was their first job experience as they learned a variety of skills related to operating a business including how to open, close, cash out, make deposits, and manage inventory.
