After more than 15 years representing Wood River in the Saskatchewan Legislature, Yogi Huyghebaert is saying his goodbyes in Regina.

Huyghebaert, who was elected as the Sask Party representative to the Wood River constituency in June of 2000, has elected to retire from politics, and Thursday marks the last sitting of the Legislature before the next provincial election, slated for April 4, 2016.

"One of the biggest things I'm going to miss are the people," Huyghebaert told us. "We've formed some extremely good friendships over the 15 and a half years I've been (in the Legislature)....and you just can't say 'goodbye' to friends.  When I walk out of the building today, I know I"m going to see my friends again."

Huyghebaert entered political life after a successful career in the Canadian military. He enrolled in the Canadian Air Force in 1961, spent some time in Germany in the late 60s as a squadron pilot, and served two tours with the Snowbirds; in 1974-75 he was solo number nine pilot, and then he became team leader in 1985-86.

"Of course the Snowbirds were one of my (career) highlights, there's no doubt about that," said Huyghebaert, who reflected on a few career accomplishments. "In my political time I guess changing the face of Saskatchewan under Brad Wall (was a highlight)..this province has come a long way since we formed government in 2007."

What's next for the 71-year old who was born in Lafleche, SK?

"I'm going to take a little time and travel," he said, while adding there's also plenty at home to keep him occupied. "I have a half-section of ranchland..it's small, but it will keep me busy. You know talking with friends and colleagues in the past, you're busier in retirement sometimes than when you're working, because everybody's after your time."

In addition to Huyghebaert, here are the other MLAs who have decided to retire from politics as of Thursday:

Wayne Elhard - Sask Party Cypress Hills

June Draude - Sask Party Kelvington-Wadena
