Here until Dec. 6, "Hiding in Plain Sight" is a new exhibit at the Western Development Museum that explores the historical portrayal of the Métis Nation.

It contains photographs and documents from Canada's past in which Metis individuals were previously misidentified or ignored.

Kathy Fitton, the manager of the WDM here in Moose Jaw, explains more.

"Identifying citizens of the Métis Nation in the archival record collection isn't easy. Often they have been wrongly categorized as belonging to another people group."

The purpose of the exhibit is to help uncover the great variety of documents about Métis people and explore their portrayal in these documents, while also providing a better understanding of their history.

"The display talks about some of the different symbols and terminology that would have been used to help identify these folks as being citizens of the Métis Nation. So like clothing, surroundings, language or occupation."

Fitton hopes that the display will help visitors to truly understand who these people really were for the first time.

You can visit the exhibition Wednesdays through Sundays.
