Thursday was Family Literacy Day, though it capped off a full week of Literacy activities at Sunningdale Elementary School in Moose Jaw.

The students and staff at Sunningdale decided to extend the observance into an entire week full of reading-related events. Family Literacy Day is an opportunity to demonstrate the importance of reading and to celebrate literature all while having some fun.

Principal of Sunningdale Elementary, Steve Michaluk, described their jam-packed week.

"We have done a lot of different things here this week, including our family reading challenge, a spelling bee which was put on by our School Community Council” said Michaluk, “and then of course our community readers coming in [today] and the Moose Jaw Warriors were in [Yesterday].” Among the local celebrities that came in to read to students were Moose Jaw mayor Deb Higgins, Police Chief Rick Bourassa, and Rob Carnie and Teagan Witko from Golden West Radio.

The “Family Reading Challenge” has become an annual endeavor, with Michaluk saying the combined goal between staff and students was to surpass 68,000 pages of reading material.
