Moose Jaw Police are sending out a warning after a local resident was taken for $50,000, money they thought they were sending to someone who cared about them.

The romance scam is more common than we may think according to Sgt Kevin Pilsworth who says the suspect typically starts small by saying they need money for a plane ticket to visit or to help a sick family member and they try to push it as far as they can.

"People that are out there and having some of those connections and considering sending any money, just get a second opinion... there's so many scams out there nowadays."

Often times the scam isn't even realized because the relationship just ends.  Other times, the victim is too embarrassed to go to police.
