Numerous road safety initiatives ranging from digital speed signs to speed bumps and sidewalks are coming to communities across Saskatchewan, thanks to the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund.

Manager of Media Relations for SGI, Tyler McMurchy provides details on the funding.

"It's a fund that's paid into through the proceeds of photo speed enforcement. Communities are able to benefit from that by accessing funding for traffic safety initiatives. So this latest round of funding involves 112 traffic safety projects across 108 communities in the province for total funding of 1.4 million dollars."

The grant program was established as another way to benefit and enhance safety on public roads across the province and since its inception in 2019, it has funded 309 initiatives with more than 3.6 million dollars in funding.

McMurchy adds that there are strict criteria to be followed and met in order for the communities to receive funding and based on its popularity he believes it is something that communities have found to be quite helpful and provides some insight into why.

"When you are looking at something you can tangibly see out in your community whether it's a new crosswalk or speeding calm device or any number of the different types of projects that are available. This is something that there is a tangible benefit there that will actually go to making the community safer."

The initiatives can focus on a number of areas, many are related to speeding but they can also focus on other priority areas such as impaired or distracted driving and intersection safety.

There are two rounds of funding each year with the next round having already begun on July 1st and will run for three months.
