Saskatchewan's population ended 2019 on an all-time high, growing to 1,178,657 people.

That marked the 54th straight quarter that saw a bump in the provincial population.

Minister of Government Relations, Lori Carr, talks about how the province is preparing for the population to grow even more.

"Our infrastructure needs in Saskatchewan are always there as we grow. Basically we just have to focus on what the needs are and what the priorities are, and all of that stuff will come out on budget day. Its really exciting that we're watching our province grow as it has, and as it will in the future."

Carr says it's tough to tell at the moment how infrastructure costs might be affected by the rising population, due to the rise in demand for services that a higher population would bring.

"Currently we're right in the middle of the budget process, and that's a process that happens annually. We look at what's happening and what the needs are and we base our decisions on that."

In terms of how the provincial population could grow, even more, Carr says the oil sector could have lots to do with bringing more people in.

"We're finally getting a little bit of uptake on the oil side of things again so that's certainly helping. We aren't back where we were a few years ago but things are growing. If we pick up to 2012 levels there definitely will be an influx of people, and that would be very exciting."

Premier Scott Moe announced at the end of 2019 that he hopes to increase the population to 1.4 million people by 2030. A Premier Moe also set the goal of adding 100,000 new jobs to the province.

Since 2007, the population has grown by almost 170,000 people.
