With the federal government's announcement and plan this week for the future of Canada Post, it seemed like the federal panel that travelled the country, was ignored when it came time to make a decision.

Tom Lukiwski, MP for Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan was Chair of the Committee and travelled the country with a group of colleagues and staffers from Ottawa, tasked with gathering information, stories and opinions from Canadians on what we would like the national mail carrier to look like in the future.

The House of Commons committee made a stop in Moose Jaw as part of their national review and in their recommendations, suggested that any community that lost door-to-door service after August 3, 2015 should have it reinstated.

"Some places would get door-to-door delivery back under the committee recommendations and others wouldn't," explained Regina NDP MP and committee member Erin Weir in 2016. "The NDP's perspective is that the Prime Minister should keep his promise he made during the (2015 federal election), which was to reverse all of those conversions to community mailboxes."

Other recommendations from the committee included:
- increases in postal rates
- expanding Canada Post’s mandate to provide cellular services or broadband Internet
- including email services or “the basis for a Canadian social network
- Canada Post partnering with with e-commerce companies to generate more revenues

"While the whole consultation process was valuable, one of the reasons the government did it was to back away from its promise to restore door-to-door delivery everywhere," Weir stated after the report was delivered in Ottawa.

The government has missed several self imposed deadlines to make a decision based on the recommendations and it looks like Weir was right about backing away from door to door service. The announcement this week flat out states that Canada Post will continue to run as is and that has Lukiwski feeling like his committee was ignored.

"It cost close to $500,000 to do this cross country tour. It was a consultation process that the government said would give them a path forward as to the future of Canada Post." said Lukiwski. "That certainly is not the case and I think it would be fair to say that, in the eyes of many people, it was a tremendous waste of money."

Lukiwski added that many of his fellow MP's, on both sides of the House, are upset with the plan of not returning to Door to Door delivery.
