The opposition NDP is calling on Premier Scott Moe to reverse his stance of show proof of vaccination for COVID-19 to attend sporting events and concerts.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Moe said the province would be not considering vaccine passports or requiring proof of vaccinations for large events.

The NDP had a media availability in front of Mosaic Stadium. on Wednesday with Regina University MLA Aleana Young and Regina Elphinstone-Centre MLA Meara Conway.

Conway said there is no reason why Saskatchewan can’t ask for proof of vaccination for large events.

“These huge stadium events, whether their Rider games or music concerts, have the potential to be super spreader events,” Conway said.

“This is a very reasonable step that we can take. We've seen Manitoba take it. There's really no reason why we don't do the same here in Saskatchewan.”

Young had even stronger words for the premier.

“For the premier to say ‘Oh, you know we can’t ask people to say whether or not they've been vaccinated to go to a mass event, and potentially unmasked is, I guess at best, it doesn't make any sense, and at worst, it's wildly irresponsible,” she said.

During his press conference on Tuesday, Moe cited privacy issues as the reason the province will not ask for proof of vaccination.

He says there would still be potential situations requiring proof of vaccination in terms of federal or international situations, like travel, but in the province, there would not be a requirement.
