A man was shot and killed at a residence on the Fishing Lake First Nation.

According to a media release from the RCMP, on Tuesday, August 27th at 1:23 pm, officers from the Wadena RCMP detachment were called to the residence.

The caller reported an armed male, carrying a knife, who was known to the caller, was causing a disturbance at the residence.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, two Wadena RCMP officers located the male, and at least one RCMP officer discharged their firearm.

The adult male was injured, and the officers called for assistance, and performed first aid until the Wadena Emergency Medical Service arrived.

The male died at the scene.

The two officers involved were removed from the scene, as per protocol, as they could be relieved by other police officers.

An investigation will be conducted by an external agency into the matter.

According to the release:

"When an incident results in death or serious injury, the RCMP Act – the legislation that governs the RCMP – requires that an investigation be conducted by an external agency. Therefore, the Saskatchewan RCMP has requested an independent external police investigation in to the circumstances of this incident. The Moose Jaw Police Service will be conducting this investigation. The RCMP has also requested that the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice appoints an independent observer to assess the quality of the external investigation."

The Fishing Lake First Nation is approximately 210 kilometres northeast of Regina.
