On Tuesday, Canada Road Safety Week 2018 began.

It's an annual country-wide initiative recognized and carried out by law enforcement across the Canada, including the Moose Jaw RCMP.

"This time of year when we're leading up to the first long weekend we're definitely wanting to remind motorists to be alert on the highway, be prepared, don't rush," said Sgt.Tim Schwartz. "I look at four big factors, those include speeding, impaired driving, seat belts and distracted driving."

Not only will officers be patrolling roadways they will also be setting up check stops to make sure that all residents are having a safe May long weekend.

"What you'll find across Canada for this week, we will be conducting lots of roving stops, stationary stops and insuring that we are able to hold people responsible," added Sgt.Schwartz. "If we do find someone that is in violation than we will have them removed from being on the road."

Local Law enforcement would like all drivers and passengers being safe all year round, but this week in particular you will see more uniforms while traveling to your extended weekend plans.

"We're really encouraging that not only during Road Safety Week, that we want road safety 52 weeks of the year. It's everyone's responsibility that has the privilege to drive is responsible for their actions."

He added to make sure you leave for you destination with plenty of time, give your passenger your phone if your waiting for a call or text, and don't rush as it could lead to a potential serious situation.

Canada Road Safety week run May15th-21st, with National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day falling on this upcoming Saturday.
