Assiniboia's Civic Improvement Association (CIA) was given a $75,000 cheque Monday night.

It's the latest fundraising victory for the town in their attempts to build a new multi-purpose facility that will include a new ice rink.

The money came from Federated Coop's "Community Spaces"  initiative, which will see $2 million handed out to community projects across western Canada this year alone.

The ceremony was held on the future site of the facility, which will be named "Southland Coop Arena."

A family barbecue was held to celebrate the cheque presentation

Southland Coop, which has has grocery stores and/or gas bars in Assiniboia, Gravelbourg, Mossbank, Coronach and Lafleche, had already committed $300,000 to the project.

In April, CIA President Curtis Nelson told us they had raised about $4.2 million of the projected $8 million cost, and would hopefully break ground on the project sometime this year, with construction expected to last "about a year and a half to two years."

"It'll house about a thousand people," Nelson said of the new arena. "It will have a walking track and will be a state-of-the-art facility for the size of community we're in."
