With just over thirty being stolen in the last two months in Moose Jaw, bike thefts are definitely a regular occurrence in the Friendly City.

That's just the confirmed ones, according to the Moose Jaw Police Service, not everyone chooses to them report stolen bikes to them, and of that thirty, they've only had luck recovering three.

In most situations, they go missing simply by not locking the bike up.

"Most current ingredient in the situation is the bikes are not properly secured," Sgt Kevin Pilsworth said. "Even if it's in someone's yard or around their residence, quite often it's a case of somebody just putting their bike somewhere temporarily and then it goes missing."

It is a tough situation any way you put it, but there is one way to help if your bike does end up being stolen.

"Record the serial number. Mark that, put it somewhere safe so that if it is stolen, you have at least a way of identifying it," Sgt Pilsworth suggested. "Most of the bikes that are being stolen, when they are turning up they are for the most part unchanged but there are some bikes that people will paint and swap parts."

Sgt Pilsworth says the best way to keep track of your bike is to write down the serial number. Then even if the bike is re-painted or changed, the police can still identify it.

If your bike does go missing, report it to the MJPS. Then there will be another set of eyes looking for your stolen property.
