The top team in Western Canada will be decided this weekend here in Moose Jaw.

The Moose Jaw Padres are hosting four teams starting on Friday for the 2018 Western Canadian Senior Men's Baseball Championship at Ross Wells Park.

"This is the highest baseball that us old guys can play, there’s one team from B.C, two from Manitoba and two from Saskatchewan," said Padres catcher Brett Walchuk.

The Padres competition over the course of the weekend will include the Saskatoon Outlaws; the St. James A's and Border All-Stars out of Manitoba; and Prince George Grays from B.C.

Moose Jaw had their season in the Qu'Appelle Valley Baseball League wrap-up last week. Walchuk said the team is playing well heading into Westerns.

"Pitching is firing, hitting is just coming along, it's right in the right place we want it to be for the tournament, we've got a few pick-ups from the provincial weekend, so our team looks pretty strong for the weekend," said Walchuk.

"The season went pretty well for us, we finished third overall, which is one of the higher finishes for us, we’ve been gaining over the last couple of years; we're excited about Westerns."

The Padres feature former Moose Jaw Miller Express players Taylor Elder, Brandon Loveridge and Dustin Caplette-Tarrant.

The tournament will open with round-robin play throughout the day on Friday and Saturday, as well as Sunday morning, and the final is scheduled for Sunday at 5:30 p.m.

The opening game has the Saskatoon Outlaws battling the Prince George Grays at 10 a.m. at Ross Wells Park.

The Padres' first game will see them take on the St. James Athletics at 1 p.m. They will also meet up with the Grays at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
