The Moose Jaw Warriors' 2018 Preseason schedule came to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 shootout loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings at Mosaic Place.

In the opening period, the teams established a quick hard pace, the Warriors did a good job pressuring the Wheat Kings with their fore-check and had sustained attack while Brandon used their speed to drive up the ice quickly and attack the Moose Jaw net.

Both teams had strong defensive first periods, as they limited the quality scoring opportunities and allowed a combined for 11 shots on net to keep the game scoreless after one.

Early in the second period, the Wheat Kings took back-to-back penalties to give the Warriors 66 seconds worth of a two-man advantage.

Moose Jaw didn't score on the five-on-three, but they were able to convert on the power play at 3:22, when Tristin Langan snuck a shot from inside the right circle past Brandon goalie Jiri Patera.

It didn't take the Wheat Kings long to respond, as seven seconds after the Moose Jaw goal, they were able to tie the game at one with a goal from Ben McCartney.  Brandon took a 2-1 lead at 11:12 when a loose puck went off of Rylan Bettens charging the net.

Just 2:48 into the third period the Warriors worked the puck along the Brandon boards to the right point for Matthew Benson, the second year defenceman lifted a shot towards the net where Tyler Smithies was able to deflect it past the Brandon goalie to even the game at two.

For the remainder of the third period, the Warriors did a good job creating scoring chances and outshot Brandon 9-1 in the period, but weren't able to snag a go-ahead goal.

In overtime, the two teams pushed the pace and once again had their moments to end the game, but neither was able to push the puck over the goal line which forced a shootout.

In the shootout, the Warriors sent out Yegor Buyalski, Daniil Stepanov, and Tate Popple, but unfortunately, none of them were able to beat Patera, while McCartney scored the only goal of the shootout for Brandon to lift them to the win

Moose Jaw outshot Brandon 24-21 and they were 1-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Warriors finish their preseason schedule with a record of 2-3-0-1, they were 1-0-0-1 at home and 0-3 on the road.  Smithies (one goal, three assists), Daemon Hunt (four assists), and Yegor Buyalski (four assists) led the Warriors in preseason scoring with four points each.

The organization will now set their sights on preparing for the 2018-19 regular season, which opens next weekend with a home-and-home series against the Brandon Wheat Kings. The division rivals open up the New Year on Friday in Manitoba and then the series shifts to Moose Jaw for the Warriors’ Home Opener on Saturday at Mosaic Place.
