The Moose Jaw Warriors got five goals from five different players in a 5-2 win over the Kootenay Ice Friday at Mosaic Place to improve their record to 5-0-0-0.

Brayden Burke picked up three assists, while Brett Howden and Noah Gregor had a goal and two points each in the Warriors’ fifth straight win to start the season.

Throughout the first period, the Warriors attacked the Kootenay net, they outshot the Ice 16-10 in the period and created plenty of opportunities in tight on goalie Kurtis Chapman.

For the fifth time in six games, the Ice scored the game’s first goal, at 12:37, veteran forward Barrett Sheen led an odd-man rush up the ice and finished the drive with a shot to the back of the Moose Jaw net.

Three minutes later the Warriors responded, Burke came out of the penalty box and jumped on a puck in the neutral zone.  He came across the Kootenay left line and lifted a pass to Oleg Sosunov driving through the middle where the Tampa Bay Lightning prospect reeled the pass in and put a back hand past Chapman for his third of the season.

Moose Jaw took their first lead of the game just 17 seconds later when Jayden Halbgewachs, Luka Burzan and Gregor came in on the attack.  Gregor took a shot from the right circle and the rebound came to Halbgewachs on top of the left crease where he scored his fourth of the year.

Kootenay started the second period with a two-man advantage for a 1:06, but the Warriors penalty kill buckled down and gave up just one shot to hold on to their lead.

Back on the penalty kill with under five minutes left in the period, Howden stole the puck away from the Ice in the neutral zone and drove hard across the Kootenay line.  With a back-checker all over him, Howden drove on the right wing and then charged the net where he lifted the puck short-side over the glove of Chapman for his second goal of the year.

Just over two minutes later, the Warriors were on the power play and whipped the puck around the Kootenay zone and eventually set up Gregor for a quick shot between the circles where his second of the year made it 4-1.

Moose Jaw kept Kootenay on their heels throughout the third period and picked up a goal from Justin Almeida midway through to extend their lead.  Kootenay was able to get a goal with under three minutes left in the game, but that would be as close as they would get.

Brody Willms made 22 saves, including multiple big saves throughout the game. The Warriors were 1-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

Moose Jaw will have Saturday off to rest and get ready for a Thanksgiving Sunday battle against the Swift Current Broncos at 4 p.m. at Mosaic Place.

This will be the team’s first meeting since their 2017 first round playoff series.
