A late inning charge fell short for the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Tuesday night in an 8-4 loss to the Swift Current 57s at Ross Wells Park.

Swift Current struck for four runs in the first inning, led 5-0 after two and saw starting pitcher Isiah Campa carry a perfect game into the sixth inning.

Millers head coach Michael Hunt said after the game that he wants to see more urgency from his squad to start games.

"I saw some struggles at the plate (early in the game), we made contact, just not very good contact and not soon enough, but we did rally back in the end, we got good at-bats and created some things, so if we're going to take a positive out of that, it's never over, but if you give up early, it's going to be over way to early," said Hunt.

Campa kept the Millers off balance early on in the game, retiring the first 15 batters that Moose Jaw sent to the plate before third baseman John Prudhom belted a home run to lead-off the sixth inning.

"He really had us off guard early and we never really found it, so it's a tough one," said Prudhom.

The sixth inning blast was the second of the season for the 19-year-old from Racine, Wisconsin. This one was a bit more special for Prudhom however.

"I was just thinking hit it hard somewhere, I promised my mom that I'd something cool for her, so that was fun," said Prudhom, who's mother had made the trip to Moose Jaw for the game.

Despite the Millers slow start, Prudhom's home run had cut the 57s lead to 5-1 and the score stayed that way until the ninth inning when Swift Current’s Ben Komonosky hit a two-run bomb as part of a three-run inning that gave the 57s some much needed cushion.

The Millers responded in the bottom half of the inning with some good at-bats against reliever Nick Hooper, who struggled with his command, walking three, hitting one batter and allowing a run to come in on a wild pitch. Moose Jaw scored three runs in the frame, but it was too little, too late.

Moose Jaw starter Michael Mommersteeg lasted just three innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk, while striking out four.

Reliever Nick Falco came on and held the 57s off the board with five scoreless innings. He surrendered just three hits and three walks, and also struck out four.

Matt Perry allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in the ninth inning.

The loss dropped the Millers' record to 18-18 this season in the Western Major Baseball League and moved them two games behind the 57s for third place in the Eastern Division.

Hunt feels the team still has some more to give and they need that to come out over the next week-and-a-half.

"I definitely don't think we've peaked yet, but we're running out of time to find that peak, so maybe it's going to be a baseball god thing where it's the last week of the season and we roll hot into the playoffs," said Hunt.

The Millers return to the field on Wednesday night to host the Okotoks Dawgs at Ross Wells Park. First pitch is at 7 p.m.
