After further evaluation, defensive end Charleston Hughes won’t be in the lineup on Saturday when the Saskatchewan Roughriders take on the Calgary Stampeders.

The Roughriders released a statement on Friday that they have reviewed the information collected on Hughes’ impaired driving charge from last week and they have decided to remove him from the active roster for Saturday’s game.

The Riders have also fined Hughes the largest amount allowable under the CFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.

"While the legal proceedings are still ongoing, the incident of October 11 reflects negatively on the Saskatchewan Roughriders Football Club. By refusing to provide a breath sample, Hughes demonstrated behaviour directly in conflict with the Club’s values and expectations — which include police and police procedures," read the statement from the Riders.

Hughes, who leads the CFL in sacks, was charged with impaired driving after allegedly being found unresponsive behind the wheel in the early morning hours on Oct. 11.

The Riders’ veteran apologized to fans and the organization when he met with the media on Wednesday.

Saskatchewan will take on the Stampeders in Calgary on Saturday at 5 p.m. For more on the Hughes situation and the Riders going into Saturday's game, listen to this week's Rider Report Podcast.
