The Moose Jaw Peewee Mustangs haven't even suited up for a regular season game yet, but already have their first tournament win under their belt.

The Mustangs went 3-1 over the weekend, including avenging their only loss, on their way to capturing the gold medal at the Swift Current Box Lacrosse Tournament.

"We weren't sure what to expect with it being our first games of the season, so as a group, we just decided that we wanted to work hard, put a good effort in every game and get better every game and we did that, so it was good," said Mustangs coach Jeremy Ebbett.

The Mustangs gave up three third period goals and lost 3-2 to the Swift Current Rampage Blue in their tournament opener on Saturday morning, but they would get a chance to avenge that loss.

Moose Jaw and Swift Current met up again in the gold medal game on Sunday with the Mustangs coming away with a 6-3 win to capture the title.

Ebbett said it was nice to see the team come back with that win.

"I thought we had a more consistent effort out of everyone, everyone was more comfortable and we played the full game, and that made the difference, we just never let up on the team or let them back into the game," said Ebbett.

With no game action together yet, the tournament served as trail by fire for the Mustangs, who passed with flying covers.

After losing to Swift Current in their opening game, the Mustangs beat the Estevan Voltz, 9-3, in their second game on Saturday and then they secured a 6-5 win over the Regina Outlaws to end the busy Saturday.

Ebbett said you could tell that the players were ready to hit some competition, "It gets old for the kids when they have practice, practice, practice, so when we can pound four games into them in two days, it's good, it really helps them understand more of the game," he said.

With their first game action under their belt, the Mustangs were able to see area that they're strong in and where they still need some work heading into the start of the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League season.

"Stick skills are always an issue early in the season, so passing and catching, we have to do a better job at that kind of stuff and managing the game when we do have the lead," said Ebbett. "We showed big improvement and we showed that we can start thinking the game and our team play really came together, the kids really started to get comfortable with each other as the weekend went on."

The Peewee Mustangs will be back on the court on Saturday when they host Standing Buffalo as part of a four-game day at the Kinsmen Arena.

The Bantam Mustangs were also in Swift Current on the weekend and ended up finishing in fourth place. They went 1-3 overall and lost 3-2 to the Swift Current Rampage Blue in the bronze medal game on Sunday.

They will open their league season on Wednesday when they host the Estevan Voltz, 7:30 p.m, at the Kinsmen Arena.

In lacrosse action on Monday night, the Novice Mustangs battle the Weyburn Thrashers to a 1-1 tie at the Kinsmen Arena in their season opening game.
