The Assiniboia Rockets haven’t won a game yet this season, but they aren’t an easy out either for teams in the boys division of the Moose Jaw High School Senior Basketball League.

Much of that has to do with the ability of guard Logan Fettes to put the ball in the basket. Entering Tuesday’s game at Peacock Collegiate, the Rockets’ senior was averaging a league-best 38 points per game.

The Peacock Toilers were able to hold Fettes to a season-low 28 points on their way to a 93-51 win over Assiniboia on Tuesday night.

“We’ve been working a lot on motion on offence throughout the week, so we were just trying to get the ball moving, get some good looks and it was working out,” said Peacock senior Riley Herridge after the win.

Jett Kowalchuk led the Toilers in the win with 20 points, while Shae Zwozdesky chipped in with 17 and Spencer Adams finished with 15 points. All but one of the Toilers found the scoresheet in the win.

Herridge said they had better and better ball movement as the game went on and that allowed them to keep pulling away from the Rockets.

“We’ve had some lulls at tournaments and stuff, so we’ve been focusing on getting some good looks and it’s starting to really flow, so it’s good,” he said.

The Toilers’ depth ended up being too much for the Rockets, who had just seven players in their lineup, compared to the 12 that hit the floor for Peacock.

“We had a lot of slack moments, but we’re playing schools that are way bigger than us, so it’s good to come out and compete against these high calibre teams, it will only help us in the future,” said Fettes after the loss.

Fettes is putting together an incredible season so far for the Rockets. Tuesday’s game was the first in which he’s been held under 30 points this season. He had topped 40 points in two of the past three games as well.

His season average sits at 36 points per game after Tuesday’s contest, which would be the second-highest total in league history.

“I’m feeling okay, there’s still a lot of downs to my game, but I’ve just got work hard and it will come,” said Fettes. “I feel like I do a good job of pushing the pace, I’m pretty fast out there, but I need to work on taking smarter shots and distributing more.”

Cornerstone’s Brian Fisher holds the single-season points per game record after averaging 38.5 in 2004-05.

Marcus Navato added nine points for Assiniboia in the loss, which dropped their record to 0-6 on the year.

Peacock improves to 4-1 on the year, which has them in second place in the boys division.

In other boys action on Tuesday night, the first place Central Cyclones stayed undefeated with a 99-63 win over the Vikings at Vanier Collegiate. Central improves to 6-0, while Vanier drops to 3-3 with the loss.

Riley Seaborn led all scorers with 24 points in the win for Central, while Fharis Ebet and Kyle Boughen added 15 points each. Vanier’s top scorer was Ryan Stefanovic with 11 points in the loss.

In the girls division, the Peacock Toilers improved to 5-0 with a 77-28 win over the Assiniboia Rockets, who dropped to 2-4. Peacock’s Anna Maelde led all scorers with 18 points, while Maura Belles had nine in the loss for Assiniboia.

There was no score reported from the Vanier-Central girls game.
