Moose Jaw Memories project set to be unveiled
The City of Moose Jaw Heritage Advisory Committee, in partnership with local company memoryKPR, is set to launch the Moose Jaw Memories project. The project has been in the works for the past two years, with the vision of giving tourists and Moose Javians access to in-depth historic information while walking through the downtown area. Currently, a few of the city’s heritage plaques downtown feature QR codes that visitors can scan with their phones to learn more about the site’s history. “This is just the beginning of our project. We see it going many, many different directions,” said Janie Fries of the Heritage Advisory Committee. Fries said the project is still in its early stages. The committee has partnered with Saskatchewan Polytechnic to create videos for the site. At the moment, five two-minute videos have been produced, with another five set to be created this semester. “We realized that as people access this information walking down Main Street, they don’t have all day,” Fries said, referring to the short length of the videos. The Heritage Advisory Committee has compiled about 29 stories so far as part of the project, with some featuring multiple chapters. For example, city hall includes sections about the original city hall site, the present-day building and the renovations to the bell tower. However, the committee is encouraging the public to submit their own stories. “We — meaning the Heritage Advisory Committee, City Hall, the public library, any business or individual — we do not own the memories of Moose Jaw. They belong to all of us,” Fries said. She added that the committee is looking to expand the project beyond historic buildings. For example, they’re exploring collections focused on local veterans. Those looking to learn more about the project or share their own stories can attend the project’s launch on Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Moose Jaw Public Library’s south meeting room.
