Weather affects our skin, regardless of the season.

Winter weather can be especially harsh on the body's largest organ.

The dry, cool air can leave skin feeling chapped, dry, and itchy.

Vicki Watson, a registered massage therapist and skincare specialist, is the owner of Moose Jaw's Wrapture Spa & Boutique. She said people should take care of their skin in cold weather. "Inclement weather is distressing to the skin. Using a nice hydrator in the winter time is really good to stop stressors on the skin, like broken capillaries, which is the redness you can see with extreme exposure to cold."

Cold weather, says Watson, can cause extreme dryness, like flaking through the cheeks and the forehead. She said the cold weather can exascerbate pre-existing skin conditions, as well as increase oil production, which means the skin is trying to compensate for the dryness.

Watson said covering your cheeks and nose when out-of-doors is a good way to protect your skin in the winter time.

Watson also said she believes being proactive is better than being reactive when it comes to skin care, but that it's never too late. She said season change is a great time to start a skincare regime or assess your skin.
