Two impaired drivers were caught on the roads last night. The first vehicle was stopped by Moose Jaw Police at 6:45 pm. The subject had their vehicle impounded and they were released with a later court date.  The second driver was caught at 9:50 pm. They were issued a 21-day license suspension and their vehicle was seized for 7 days.

Tonight is New Year's Eve and people are coordinating plans with friends and family to celebrate and possibly have a few drinks. Finding a safe ride home after the festivities is crucial for everybody's safety but finding someone to stay sober to drive you from place to place can sometimes be difficult.

The City of Moose Jaw and SGI have partnered up to bring 'Wing In the New Year,' where you can catch the city bus from 7:55 pm to 3:15 am on New Year's Eve for free. This initiative took a back seat last year due to the pandemic and the lack of events going on. Impaired driving-related collisions took the lives of three people last holiday season in Saskatchewan and injured 44. Impaired driving should never be an option.

“The New Year is a time to celebrate with friends and family, and getting home safe from those celebrations is paramount,” said Mayor Clive Tolley. “We thank SGI and all of our partners for supporting 'Wing In The New Year' and allowing Moose Jaw Transit to offer you a safe, free ride to and from your New Year’s destination.”

This is the 32nd year this service is available, and modifications have been made to regular Transit routes to better serve events on New Year's Eve. Bus stops have also been added to popular areas such as Brown’s Social House, The Crushed Can Rec Room & Bar/Cask 82, Chiller’s Brew Pub and Dooly’s Billiards & Lounge. This free service is only available within city limits.

Don Morgan, Minister responsible for SGI says this service is for anyone. "The idea is to give people a safe option to get home without drinking and driving, so book it, make a plan so you aren't driving while impaired," says Morgan.

Paratransit will also be available, to book this service you can call Moose Jaw Transit at 306-694-4488 or email: transit@MooseJaw.ca

Masks will be mandatory on the bus. Check back to https://moosejaw.ca/streets-roads/transit/ for the New Year's Eve bus schedule.
