If you want to make a change it starts with yourself, and that's exactly what one family did in the community of Weyburn.

For the last five years, the Weger family along with relatives and friends have been baking and delivering boxes of butter tarts while raising funds for Cystic Fibrosis(CF) research. The diagnosis hit home a little over 10 years ago

when Mike Weger and his wife heard the news that their daughter, who at the time was two and a half-years-old, had CF. They knew they wanted to help in some way, so they decided to build off another idea based out of Saskatoon.

They began to put together boxes of 25 tarts and sell them for $25 to friends and neighbours, but after a handful of years, the orders are now coming in from further than their community. This week someone will be delivering treats from the 'Big Butter Tart Bake for Cystic Fibrosis' to the Friendly City.

"It's really been helpful having other communities getting involved to make orders. We're in Weyburn there's a population of 10,000 people, we've made almost two butter tarts for every person in the city of Weyburn so obviously, we can't sell them all here. We need to spread out to other areas. It's very helpful when we have people who come to Weyburn pick up an order and then take a large order back to their community and disperse it for us," explained Weger. "That's exactly what we plan on doing in Moose Jaw. We have some contacts in Moose Jaw, there are some families that have been affected by Cystic Fibrosis as well, so we're using those people to help us collect orders."

This week they plan to have someone arrange a pick up on behalf of our community or they will be sending out a driver who will be dropping off the orders so families can have the treats for their Christmas gatherings.

WeGer said that as a father he wanted to do something where he knew he was helping to one day have a cure for his daughter and all other children who have been diagnosed with it.

"My wife and I were both raised that if you have a problem you gotta fix it yourself, because no one else is going to fix it for you. We just bare down and think of different ways to raise money and know that we are making a difference and it all adds up. In fact, over the last ten years if we looked at all the fundraising efforts we've been involved in it's added up to $500,000."
