The Water Security Agency (WSA) has put out an advisory for potential ice jams on the Moose Jaw River following the recent rapid melting of snow and runoff.

The WSA is warning that ice jams increase the risk of localized flooding as they disrupt the normal flow of the river and can cause the water to breach the embankments.

Runoff within the headwater areas of the Moose Jaw River basin is higher than expected, according to the WSA. The flow of the Moose Jaw River is expected to be similar to March 2022 when the channel through Moose Jaw was at capacity.

Residents are being advised to the potential for ice jams and the possibility for flooding upstream. Ice jams can result in rapidly changing water levels, so residents are asked to not venture out on ice jams.

The WSA says it is will continue to monitor the conditions and provide updates to potential ice jams as conditions develop.
