With their first pick in the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft, the Moose Jaw Warriors went to a well that has worked out for them in spades before.

The Warriors selected defenceman Daemon Hunt out of Brandon, MB with the 15th overall pick, adding him to a long list of rear-guards that the team has had success with from the province to the east, including Jett Woo and Josh Brook, who are currently on the Warriors.

For his part, Hunt is looking forward to joining the organization and carving out his own legacy.

“I’m completely honoured,” he said. “Growing up watching the WHL, it’s played a big role in my life and I’m glad that the Moose Jaw Warriors picked me up.

“I’ve heard lots of great things about Moose Jaw and I know it’s a great organization, so I’m just super honoured that they decided to go with me.”

Hunt credits his parents and coaches with getting him to this point in his hockey career.

“My parents have believed in me and supported me to get to this point and all my coaches that have giving me all the tips and pointers since I was real little up to this year in Bantam AAA in Brandon, they’ve been a great group of coaches that have helped me a lot,” he said.

Hunt brings with him some excellent numbers from the Brandon Bantam AAA Wheat Kings, he posted 22 goals and 60 points in just 36 games last season.

He said he sees himself as a strong two-way defenceman.

“I like to use my body and be physical, I can move the puck well, I’m a good skater, my first pass is pretty strong and I feel like I have good vision, so I can react quick and make the smart plays that a defenceman needs to,” said Hunt.

While he’s confident in his abilities, Hunt added that there’s still plenty for him to work on in the next year before making the jump into the Western Hockey League.

“My skating is a strength, but there’s always room for improvement, your skating is never perfect, so I’m working on that constantly,” he said. “I need to improve on my consistency as well, as a player to reach that next level, you need to be consistent.”

Warrior fans will get their first chance to see Hunt in action coming up in June when the team hosts their annual Prospects Camp. Hunt said he’s excited to get to the city.

“It should be really good, Moose Jaw sounds like a great place to play,” he said.

Hunt will be playing next season with the Brandon Midget AAA Wheat Kings.
