The hard work and patience put in by one of the Moose Jaw Warriors' rookies finally led to his first career WHL goal over the weekend.

Seventeen-year-old Kade Runke scored his first goal Sunday in Winnipeg.

“Ryder (Korczak) just chipped it along the boards to me, and I just had a one-on-one battle with their guy, and I beat him wide and cut to the net, went around the goalie and just threw ‘er in,” Runke said.

Runke fell as he scored, reminiscent at least in that way of Bobby Orr in the postage stamp moment to win the Stanley Cup in 1970.

While it wasn't enough to spark a full comeback in the team's 5-4 loss that game, it was a milestone moment that the team enjoyed.

Last year in midget AAA in his home province, Runke scored 23 goals and 40 assists for 63 points in 48 games. This year, Runke is the last of the rookies to get his first goal.

Patience was a virtue for the Grunthal, Man. product.

“It was hard mentally, but just battle through it and I knew it would come eventually,” he said. “That’s what I kept in my mind. Just stick with it.”

Runke and the Warriors have games this weekend against the Saskatoon Blades Friday and Victoria Royals Saturday.
