Another major provincial golf tournament is coming to the Hillcrest Golf Club in a couple of weeks and they need some help to make sure that the tournament runs smoothly for the competitors.

The 2015 Saskatchewan Senior Men's and Women's Golf Championship will be hosted here in Moose Jaw on August 5-7.

Over 100 golfers from around the province will be coming to the city to compete for the title as well as spots in the national championship.

“The golf course is in amazing shape and everything is breaking up for the seniors here pretty quick, guys are starting to book their practice rounds, you're seeing some of the better players in the province come down for practice rounds,” said Trevor McPherson, club pro at the Hillcrest.

In order to make sure the tournament goes well, they need some help with volunteers. McPherson said that they've had a good turnout so far, but would like to see some more people come out to help.

“We're still looking for a few, but more the merrier,” he said.

“We need spotters, scorers, there's people that follow the last groups and report scoring in, running water out to participants and out to holes. You don't need to be a member to volunteer, anybody can volunteer their time if they wish.”

A spotters job would be locate the ball on some of the holes with blind tee shots in order to speed up play. That's the area that they need the most help in.

“Volunteers are really key with everything,” said McPherson. “We do get great participation, but I'd love to see more from the community and stuff like that. It's a big thing for Moose Jaw.

The last big tournament hosted at the Hillcrest was the 2013 Junior Provincial Championship, which was won by local golfer Leighton Bearchell. Some locals have good chances to walk away with the title at this year's Senior Provincials as well.

“(Daryl) Herchuk, (Doug) Gillies, all these guys have won championships before, (Ken) Bradley, he's in his 70s now but he still plays a great game of golf, he shot 69 the other day,” said McPherson.

“Lorie Boyle should come out on top as well, I don't know if she has much competition in the ladies.”

Even if you don't want to volunteer, McPherson encourages everyone to come out and check out the golf.

“There's some great golf and if you want to watch some great golf, admission is free,” he said.
