Saturday was a good day for Vanier Collegiate.

The Moose Jaw High School Curling City Championship playdowns went over the weekend and Vanier was able to walk away with both the boys and girls city titles, while Peacock won the mixed championship.

The finalists will now be back on the ice coming up on Tuesday and Wednesday for the South Central District Championships at the Moose Jaw Ford Curling Centre.

Both the girls and mixed title winners also receive byes into provincials with their city championship wins as Moose Jaw will host their provincials coming up on Mar. 10-11.

Vanier Boys Roll to Title

The Vanier boys curling team entered as the top ranked team and they didn’t receive much resistance on their way to the title, winning all three of their games.

Vanier opened the tournament with a 13-8 win over Riverview on Friday morning and then topped Central 1, 8-3, in the afternoon draw to book their ticket into the final.

The Vikings met up with Central 1 again in the final and were able to roll to a 7-2 win to clinch the title.

“It feels pretty good, I’ve been trying to win the city title ever since grade nine and now to finally win in grade 12 is a great feeling,” said Vanier skip Brett Behm. “It’s a really great feeling with the team that we have, they’re all really great guys.”

After missing out on the title for the past three years, Behm said that the connection that the team has really helped them break through this year.

“We bond all the time, it’s a great team, we’re always joking around with each other and that’s a crucial part of the team,” said Behm.

Vanier Girls Dominant in Playoffs

The Vanier girls curling scored double digit points in all three of their games on the way to the Moose Jaw city championship on Saturday.

The road started with an 11-4 win over Central on Thursday afternoon; Vanier then followed that up with a 10-3 win over Cornerstone 1, who they would see again in the final; and beat 15-3 to capture the title.

“We played amazing,” said Vanier skip Samanthan McLaren. “We tried to get as many rocks in the house as we could and we executed that, got some big ends and just played really well.”

The Spirits fell in the final last year to finish as the runner-up, but McLaren said they were focused on making sure they came out on top this time around.

“We had a really tough game in our first one and then got better and better as the weekend went on,” said McLaren.

Vanier has already locked up their spot in provincials in March. They will look for a district title this week.

Peacock Mixed Take Long Road to Title

The Peacock mixed curling team was able to get rolling with a big win on Thursday and they didn’t look back as they won the Moose Jaw city championship on Friday night with a 13-0 win over Riverview.

Peacock 1 started the tournament with a 10-3 win over Peacock 2 on Thursday and then they downed top ranked Riverview, 8-3, on Friday morning to secure a spot in the final where they would again beat the Royals.

“As a team we played really well and we improved every time we went on the ice,” said skip Skylar Ackerman.

“We had a strong start, figured out the ice and got our draw weight down, and we were able to ride that the rest of the way.”

With the city title win, Peacock will also be heading to provincials.
