Denton Mateychuk and Cordel Larson scored 15 seconds apart in the final minute of regulation to lift the Moose Jaw Warriors to a massive 3-1 win over the Winnipeg ICE in front of 3,571 fans at Mosaic Place.

“I’m really proud of how the guys played,” Mateychuk said after the win. “We battled the whole game, there was a couple goals that got called off and we didn’t slow down, we battled hard.”

Moose Jaw snapped Winnipeg’s 13-game winning streak with the victory, bouncing back from losses to Winnipeg and Saskatoon to start the week.

“We didn’t get away from our game too much and that was definitely a playoff style game,” Mateychuk said.

“Last night on the way home from Saskatoon, we knew that we needed to come out today and we needed to be playing our game because we dropped two back-to-back and didn’t want to go three in a row late in the year.”

The Warriors withstood plenty of pressure from the WHL-leading ICE, but 16-year-old netminder Jackson Unger put together one of his best performance of the season, stopping 37 of 38 shots in the win.

“He was star of the game, made some real impressive saves post-to-post,” Warriors assistant coach Scott King said.

“A real confidence booster for him tonight and he’s the goalie of the future and showed why here tonight.”

Mateychuk said Unger’s big saves in the first period gave the team confidence going into the rest of the game.

“He was stellar tonight and we needed that,” he said. “He really helped us get through that game.”

The Warriors opened the scoring when Cole Jordan wired a point shot into the back of the net with 4:30 to go in the first period.

Winnipeg tied the game late in the second period when Ben Zloty fed Tanner Brown, who buried a shot into the back of the net.

Both teams had goals called back in the third period. First, Winnipeg thought it took the lead on a power play goal early in the first that was called back on an offside challenge.

Then, Moose Jaw had a goal called off after a Winnipeg player knocked the net off as the puck crossed the line.

The Warriors continued to pressure and got the break late when a blocked shot came right to Mateychuk at the point and he blasted home a one-timer to give Moose Jaw the lead with just 22 seconds left.

Only 15 seconds later, Larson broke into the zone and gave the Warriors some insurance with seven seconds to play.

The win, combined with Saskatoon’s 2-1 loss to Brandon, moved Moose Jaw back in front by three points for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Mateychuk said Saturday’s win is huge for the Warriors confidence moving forward.

“Going into the playoffs, we’re probably going to play [Winnipeg] if we get through the first round, so it was a playoff style game, so it was good for us to get the win,” he said.

The Warriors will finish the season with four straight road games starting next Saturday in Brandon.
