Nobody needs to explain that there's a need for some upgrades to traffic lights in Moose Jaw and the Engineering Department knows it.  That's why several major projects are about to get underway.

City Council has approved the use of over $300,000 from the traffic camera revenues for eight special projects. Colin Prang with the Engineer's Department says it comes down to safety.

"Our traffic lights have been neglected for a while and they are getting to the point where they are a safety hazard." explained Prang. "A lot of the older lights are still the incandescent bulbs and in power failures the lights go down and we've looked at battery back up."

And safety projects are what that traffic camera funding is to be used for. Some of the work includes new traffic controller units, wiring and a battery back up for the busiest intersection in the city, Main and Thatcher. Four of the eight projects are on 9th Avenue West, some of the oldest controllers in the city.
