The 70-year-old Saskatchewan curling and sports fan Hans Madsen, also known as "The Yorkton Beard Fan", has been attending the Scotties Tournament of Hearts for a long, long time.

Madsen stands out in a crowd of curling fans, mostly for his painted beard, along with his crazy hats and wigs. He also stands out for how much heart he has for the game of curling, and the people who love it as much as he does.

Madsen was diagnosed with terminal cancer a few years ago, but he says that he will never slow down, and it won't stop him from doing what he loves; cheering on all the teams, and putting a smile on someone's face.

"Oh, I've probably done this for, well, forever. I'm just trying to make the girls smile and try and make a few fans smile."

It takes Madsen about 6 hours to design different logos for his beard and he says it took a lot of practice to really get the handle on the technique.  He uses special cosmetic paint to create his signature look.

Others have said Madsen's motivation for his work remains the same for all sports and any team.

Madsen says he'd do anything "Just to make them smile."

"After this event [the Scotties] is over, we will follow the winner from here to the Women's Worlds in Prince George. We go to provincials and the provincial Scotties, we were at the provincial men's tournament, some other events, and Grand Slams, wherever the curling is. Last year we followed team Canada to Sydney, then after Team Canada won we went to Denmark to watch the Women's Worlds there."

Madsen says Mosaic Place was a fantastic venue, and that he was happy to see the big crowds come out and watch.
