The Moose Jaw Kinsmen Flying Fins used their home pool to their advantage over the weekend as they put together a stellar performance at the 50th edition of the Mike Mintenko Summerfest meet.

The local team finished second overall in the team category and there were many outstanding individual performances.

There were many standouts throughout the meet, including 12-year-old Quinn Barber, who hit the podium in three of her races, while also collecting personal best times in all seven races.

“I got first in everyone of my heats expect for one,” said Barber.

Getting to compete in her home pool, Barber added that knowing her surroundings really helped her post the times.

“It’s easier because I train in here, so I know what it’s like to swim in this pool,” she said.

Barber was awarded the swim of the meet for the Flying Fins in her 200-metre freestyle, which she was able to trim over 38 seconds off her personal best time.

“I’ve been trying to work on my head position a lot and keeping my arms in the right position, and it paid off,” Barber said.

13-year-old Devon Lowey also put together an outstanding meet for the Flying Fins, qualifying for the AA classification in two races and securing two personal best times.

He said that out of all seven races, there was one that definitely stood out for him.

“My 100-metre breast went really well, it just felt easy swimming during it,” Lowey said.

There were many great performances by the local swimmers as the Flying Fins had a top individual in 10 of the 12 age groups.
