A little snow and cold weather didn’t slow down the local cross-country runners on Wednesday.

The South Central District cross-country championship went down in Wakamow Valley with 82 runners competing for a spot at provincials next weekend.

Peacock grade nine Liam Vargo put together a stellar performance to win the midget boys division.

"I've run this course before, I knew what I wanted to do, so I set the pace right at the beginning," said Vargo. "It worked out well, my pace was a little slower than I wanted, but it was overall pretty good."

Vargo finished ahead of Rouleau's Justin Krauss in second place and Peacock teammate Rafael Pondivida in third.

The snowfall during the morning made for a muddy course in spots, Vargo said it didn’t affect him too much, but the cold weather did, "It was definitely a little bit difficult, I was stripping off gloves and stuff as I was running because it was hard to keep that good temperature," he said.

Fellow Peacock runner Miheret Cridland came away with top spot in the junior girls' division with another strong performance. She said she's walking away happy with how she was able to perform in the race.

"I tried to keep the first three laps at a good pace and then hammer out the last one, it was really tough," said Cridland. "I felt really good (throughout the race)."

Cridland finished ahead of Central's Vera Gauvin in second and Vanier's Elizabeth O’Reilly in third place in the junior girls' race.

Sunningdale's Carter Michaluk won the bantam boys division, beating teammate Bryson Aikens and Mossbank's Nathan Letnes.

In the midget girls division, Central's Akuol Riak won, finishing ahead of Central's Ellie Gauvin and Peacock's Brooklyn Roney.

Gravelbourg's Julien Gauthier won the junior boys division, as he finished ahead of Glentworth's Dylan Harden in second and Mortlach's Micah Simrose in third.

In the senior division, Vanier's Allison Grajczyk-Jelinski took the top spot in the girls' race, beating the Peacock duo of Alyssa Roney and Caitlyn Johnson.

Central's Kal McGillis captured the senior boys' title with Vanier's Samuel Moyse finishing in second and Central's Morgan Kilgour coming in third.

The top-ten finishers in the midget, junior and senior divisions advance to provincials which will go next Saturday in Delisle.
