It came right down to the wire, but Moose Jaw's Pat Simmons and Team North America were able to capture the 2016 Continental Cup of Curling in Las Vegas over the weekend.

Simmons and his team split their skins match-up with Norway's Thomas Ulsrud and his Team World squad during the final day of competition, picking up 2.5 points each for their respective teams.

Team North America ended up coming out on top overall by one point, beating Team World 30.5-29.5, to win the closest Continental Cup in the event's 12-year history.

Simmons' rink of third John Morris, second Carter Rycroft, and lead Nolan Thiessen lost their opening game in round 2 of the team competition last Thursday, falling 7-6 to China's Zang jialiang rink.

Morris then paired with Rachel Homan for a mixed doubles game on Friday, coming away with a 10-6 win over Team World's Sayaka Yoshimura and Oskar Eriksson. That night, the Simmons rink dropped their second straight game in team play, losing 7-5 to the Ulsrud rink.

Simmons teammed up American Nicole Joraanstad for a mixed doubles game on Saturday morning, but they came out with a 9-3 loss to Team World duo of Ba dexin and Kaho Onodera. That same draw, Thiessen and Lisa Weagle fell 8-4 to Havard Vad Petersson and Sarah Reid.

The Simmons rink was back on the ice for the afternoon draw to take on the Swedish rink of skipped by Niklas Edin. They split their match, finishing in a 4-4 tie.

Morris ended up making the shot that won the Continental Cup for Team North America as he nailed a take to beat Torger Nergard's team, 3-2, in a mixed doubles game, giving North America the 30.5 points needed to win curling's version of golf's Ryder Cup.

This is North America's third straight win.
