Storms packed a big punch to much of southern Saskatchewan yesterday.

Moose Jaw received just shy of 11 millimetres of rain and was the subject of a severe thunderstorm warning, but while much of the city escaped severe winds, downpours or damage, others in the province weren’t so fortunate.

“Last night, there was a line of thunderstorms last developed along a trough of low pressure moving through southern Saskatchewan,” said Brad Vrolijk of Environment Canada. “They quickly grew into a very large line, quite powerful, that resulted in severe weather across many portions of southern Saskatchewan.”

There were two funnel clouds reported with the system, one just south of Regina - the other near Rouleau.

“We had reports of golf ball sized hail near Coronach,” he said. “And then many reports of nickel to quarter-sized hail as well.”

There were some strong wind gusts reported at Yorkton, with one gust at over 100 km/h. Late in the evening, another part of the system dumped nearly 19 millimetres on the southeast corner of the province in about an hour.

The storm also was responsible for a nearly two-hour delay at the Saskatchewan Roughriders home opener.
