The final night of the regular season in the Moose Jaw High School Senior Volleyball League featured a playoff preview at Vanier Collegiate.

The host Spirits secured a four-set win over the Briercrest Christian Academy Cougars to close out the regular season on Tuesday night.

"We really came together out there tonight and we played as a team, so it was nice to see to finish off our regular season," said Vanier captain Jenna Meili.

The win puts the Spirits’ record at 10-2 this season, which ties them for first place with the Peacock Toilers, giving both teams a bye into the semifinals next week.

B.C.A. closes the regular season with a 7-5 record to finish in third place and set up a rematch with the Spirits in next Thursday’s semifinals.

Despite the loss, the Cougars are confident about how their game has developed throughout the season.

"We’re playing really good, we’re going for everything on the court and I feel like we’ve developed a lot since the beginning of the season, it started off kind of rough, but we’ve grown a lot," said Cougars senior Taylor Doerksen.

The Spirits picked up a 25-15 win in the first set against the Cougars on Tuesday. B.C.A. struck back with a 25-17 win in the second set, but Vanier closed strong with a 25-16 win in the third set and a commanding 25-10 win in the fourth set to finish off the night.

Meili said the progress that they’ve made throughout the season was on display during the match, "We’ve been really improving and working more as a team together, so it’s really nice to see it all coming together," she said.

"Some of us have played together on the team for a couple years now and we’re just more confident… We’re all pretty pumped."

The Peacock Toilers completed their regular season with a three-set win (25-10, 25-17, 25-17) over the Central Cyclones. Peacock clinched first place with a 10-2 record, while Central drops to 1-11 to finish in fifth place.

The Cyclones will take on the Cornerstone Falcons (2-10) in the girls’ quarterfinal next Tuesday with the winner advancing to take on Peacock in the semifinals.

In the boys’ league, the Vanier Vikings completed an undefeated regular season with a straight-set win (25-12, 25-14, 25-14) over the B.C.A Cougars on Tuesday.

Vanier finishes with a 10-0 record to lock up first place and a bye into the semifinals, while the Cougars went 0-10 during the regular season and will play in the quarterfinals next week.

The league ended up having a three-way tie for second place with the Central Cyclones receiving the bye into the semifinals.

Central finished the regular season by winning a three-set battle (25-23, 25-22, 29-27) over the Peacock Toilers on Tuesday to go 6-4 this season. Peacock ended up posting a 2-8 mark in the regular season to finish in fifth place.

The Cornerstone Falcons won their regular season finale, edging the Avonlea Eagles in four sets (25-21, 26-28, 25-14, 25-17) on Tuesday.

Despite the win, the Falcons ended up in fourth place behind the Eagles in third place, both with 6-4 records.

Next Tuesday’s quarterfinals will see Cornerstone host the Toilers and Avonlea will welcome in B.C.A. The winners advance to face Vanier and Central next Thursday.
