The Saskatchewan Music Festival Association Provincial Finals was this past weekend, with many Moose Jaw competitors coming out on top.

The festival was held virtually this year, as COVID-19 restrictions are still in place. Participants would record a video of themselves performing, and adjudication happened on Zoom.

The following participants are from Moose Jaw:

  • Brooke Zarubin placed first in Concert Group, Girls solo 17 and under, Musical Theatre Ballad, Musical Theatre Class and Classical.
  • Daniel McElroy placed first in the Oratorio class.
  • Ava O'Bright placed first in Trumpet Solo 17 and under.
  • Natalie Warren, runner up in Musical Theatre Excellence class 12 and under.
  • Presley McLeod placed first in 14 and under Musical Theatre.

McLeod says she has been performing for quite a while.

"Musical theatre is not just about the song, you want to make the audience feel something. It's about being as expressive as you can in just a short song," says Mcleod.

Mcleod was competing against 18 other participants.

"I haven't really won anything on a provincial level before, so this is a really big accomplishment," says Mcleod.

She says she will continue to take singing lessons and hopefully compete in the festival again next year.

The Saskatchewan Music Festival Association has been influencing music in the province for over 110 years.
