A change of scenery may be just what the doctor ordered for Brodan Salmond.

The 1998-born netminder is with the Moose Jaw Warriors as a training camp invite after 56 games over three seasons with the Kelowna Rockets.

Salmond was released over the summer and joined the Warriors just before camp with news that fellow overage goalie Brody Willms would be out for the season with a hip injury.

The Warriors have 18-year-old Adam Evanoff returning in goal, as well as 17-year-old Ethan Fitzgerald and 16-year-old Jackson Berry waiting in the wings.

Salmond said he’s here to give himself a chance to compete.

"I've heard lots of good things about the whole organization and the whole town, so definitely excited to be here," he said.

"I'm just coming in here to compete my hardest and doing everything I can to make the team and the rest is up to them, so I'm just going to control what I can control and go from there."

The Calgary product was originally a tenth round pick of the Rockets in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft, 58 picks behind Willms. He played in seven regular season games and two playoff games as a 17-year-old, posting a 2.36 goals against average and a .933 save percentage in the playoff games.

In 23 games during the 2016-17 season, Salmond had a 12-7-2-0 record with a 2.76 goals against average and a .891 save percentage.

Last season, he played in 26 games with a 13-10-0-1 record, 3.67 GAA and a .880 save percentage.

"I sat on the bench there for a while and then last year, I came into the year as the starter and things didn't really go my way, got hurt, missed about two months and tried to battle back from there," said Salmond.

"I'm excited for a new opportunity, it was kind of time for a fresh start, so I'm excited to be here in Moose Jaw."

The Warriors are expected to give Salmond an opportunity to push Evanoff for starting time going into the regular season, while also pushing the team's three young goaltenders.

"I just try to lead by example, try to do things the right way and help out the young goalies if I see anything I can help out with," said Salmond. "Mostly just try to do stuff the right way, I've been around junior hockey for a bit now and got to learn from some older guys before me and just try to pass on the stuff that they taught me."

With a week under his belt with the new team, Salmond is enjoying Moose Jaw and the Warriors, which he feels are going to be a stronger team than some might expect.

"Obviously they lost a lot of guys from last year, but they've got a solid returning core, guys who work hard and a really good returning d-core as well and that’s always nice when you're a goalie," he said with a smile.

The Warriors will open the preseason on Friday when they take on the Saskatoon Blades, 3 p.m, at the Brandt Centre as part of the Regina Pats Preseason Tournament. Moose Jaw takes on Regina on Saturday at 7 p.m.
