1st Avenue northwest is going to look a little different by the end of the month.

The project began October 8, with traffic flows on 1st Ave NW between Manitoba St. and Oxford St. adjusted to three lanes of traffic:

  • One driving lane of Northbound “through” traffic.
  • One driving lane of Southbound “through” traffic.
  • Middle driving lane devoted to “left-turn only” traffic for travellers in each direction.

The city will also start the line painting on 1st NW as soon as the weather allows as it needs to be warm and dry enough to paint, and adding extra signage along 1st Avenue NW to remind drivers of the changes.

The traffic flow changes will also result in more parking availability along 1st Avenue NW, in line with parking provisions contained in the City’s Traffic Bylaw. In addition to the new lane configuration, traffic light upgrades are being added at the intersection of 1st Ave NW and Caribou.

Communications Manager with the city of Moose Jaw, Craig Hemingway detailed how that work is going so far.

"It's a significant change you know so we appreciate everybody's patience as we do the work and we ask for everybody to exercise caution around construction crews as always. There will be some restrictions in place as the work continues but we will be finished up by the end of the month."

Steven Lopston is the Transportation Services Manager for the city of Moose Jaw.

" We have a lot of accident collisions happening up and down first and one of the reasons from the study that we were doing is because of poor sightlines through the intersections."

Below are pictures provided by the City of Moose Jaw showing how the changes will look by the end of October.
