Over 100 athletes from across the province will gather on the Vanier Collegiate grounds to participate in the 2024 Provincial Judo Championships on April 13.

The athletes will compete to be crowned the 2024 provincial champion within their respective age and weight classes.

“The best part of the event is the team bonding that it provides for all the different clubs in the province. Every club comes together with the ambition of winning lots of matches,” said Jim Wiens, VP of Judo Saskatchewan.

The club with the best performance in the event will go home with the Provincial Championship Trophy.

A provincial Kata championship will also precede the Judo portion of the event.

“The Kata part of our sport has really grown in the last five years,” said Jim Wiens, VP of Judo Saskatchewan.

“(it’s a) chance to showcase what they have been working on, have it evaluated by certified Kata judges and now you can also become a provincial champion in Canada as well.”

There are still spots available for competitors and those who wish to participate can pre-register before Tuesday, April 9, on the Judo Canada website.

Admission to the event is free and Wiens urges anyone who is interested in watching the sport to come and do so.
