Back in June of 2018, the Moose Jaw Police Service conducted a search warrant at a home on Flax Road and arrested three people.

One of those individuals was Moose Jaw's Ryan Polupski, who appeared at the Provincial Court House earlier this week for sentencing. Polupski was facing around 30 charges after police executed a search warrant at the home. Some of the charges included possession of cocaine and meth for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a firearm, careless storage of ammunition and breach of recognizance as a result of the search.

"We worked with the defense counsel and provincial crown and arrived at a resolution that involved entering pleas to a number of the allegations and a joint submission for sentencing for the judge's consideration," explained Suzanne Young of Insight Law and Crown Prosecutor. "I think it was 16 [charges] that he ended up entering guilty pleas to."

Young detailed the judge's decision from Monday and what that means for Polupski going forward.

"Anything two years or more is considered to be a federal sentence, and it's something that's served in the federal penitentiary. Now in this situation, there was a joint submission for a 31-month sentence, so of course, that is a federal sentence. But with the balance being served two years less a day, that will simply determine where Mr. Polupski serves the balance of his sentence."

She noted that despite the legal proceedings taking roughly six months, it was considerably short compared to what could have happened if Polupski decided to take each charge to trial.

"Given the number of charges, Mr. Polupski had he elected to run trials on each and every one of his charges, it would have taken a significant amount of time and resources. Therefore by entering guilty pleas at an earlier stage, that devotion of resources was avoided. It also reflects taking responsibility for the offenses."

In addition to serving time at a provincial institution, he will have to submit DNA for the national registry, as well as follow a driving ban and possession of firearms ban once released.
