The Moose Jaw Board of Police Commissioners is putting forward an amended 2021 operating budget to city council with additional savings.

About $19,000 will be coming off of the police budget in salaries and benefits after two recruits resigned from their positions.

Chief Rick Bourassa said both officers were unable to demonstrate the required proficiency with firearms at the Saskatchewan Police College.

“That is a mandatory piece of policing. We cannot have officers engaged that would not be at the appropriate level of sufficiency with firearms. So, both of those individuals did offer their resignations and I have accepted them,” Bourassa said.

vice also reduced its budget by an additional $6,000 in electrical costs due to the Saskatchewan Economic Recovery Rebate on SaskPower bills.

The amended budget has a total of $12.2 million in expenditures and a net budget of $10.7 million.

As a separate entity, the Moose Jaw Board of Police Commissioners sets the police budget and submits it to city council for final approval during budget deliberations.

The amended police budget is expected to go before city council on Monday.
