It was a great Canada Day long weekend for the Moose Jaw Peewee Mustangs.

The local squad won gold in the Peewee B Division at the annual Canada Day Box Lacrosse Tournament in Calgary, knocking off the Calgary Sabrecats, 5-4, in the final on Monday.

"The kids were pumped, they had a great weekend from start to finish," said Mustangs head coach Jeremy Ebbett. "We got off on the right foot, which always helps in a long tournament like that and they were focused and determined from start to finish, so they definitely deserved the gold medal this weekend."

The Moose Jaw Bantam Mustangs also made a final appearance at the tournament, going 4-0 in the round robin and then falling 13-5 to the Ojibway Nationals in the Bantam B Division's gold medal game on Monday.

The Peewee Mustangs went 4-0 during the round robin and finished in first place overall with 18.5 points.

Moose Jaw opened the tournament with a 6-4 win over the Sherwood Park Titans on Friday night. They followed that up with an 8-1 win over the Calgary Hornets on Saturday.

The Mustangs had two games on Sunday, rolling to an 11-2 victory over the North Okanagan Legends in the morning and then doubling the High River Heat, 6-3.

"The way the tournament is set up, it goes on period points, so there's points available every period to get you higher in the standings, so you have to stay focused and determined, and you need to win every point to finish as high as you can," said Ebbett.

The Mustangs have already won the South Saskatchewan Lacrosse League championship after going 14-3-1 during the season and Ebbett said this past weekend saw the team continue to grow together.

"The kids have been getting better and better all year and they're coming closer and closer together and it's a really tight knit team," said Ebbett. "I haven't seen a team this tight knit in a long time and it's paying off for them."

Coming off the tournament win in Calgary, the Mustangs will now turn their focus to the provincial championship, which will be decided this weekend in Estevan. Ebbett said the Mustangs' confidence is high heading into provincials.

"Anytime you can win, or even have success, it always boasts the confidence and brings the level of play up and we're looking forward to seeing what we can do at provincials," said Ebbett.

In other action in Calgary this past weekend, the Midget Mustangs just missed the playoff round after posting a 3-1 record in the round robin.

The Novice Mustangs went 2-1-1 in the Novice A Division in Calgary to finish just on the outside of the playoff round.

All four local teams will be travelling to Estevan this weekend for the provincial championship festival.
