While winter is still over a month away that doesn't mean we don't have to worry about winter weather. The snow and cold this week is just a taste of what's to come and that has CAA Saskatchewan asking drivers to think ahead.

Earlier this month, hundreds of drivers were stranded on Alberta highways after the Calgary area was hit with a large amount of snow. Many travellers were left without water, food, or extra clothing.

Christine Niemczyk with CAA says it only takes a small pack in your trunk to make it through a stressful situation. Items such as water, food, blankets, flashlights, and a shovel could turn a potentially deadly situation into an inconvenience.

"You should always be aware of your surroundings too," added Niemczyk. "When the primary roads and secondary roads are covered in snow and ice, we recommended that you stick to the primary roads. Know where you are, know your surroundings, know the highways and stick to the main ones because those are the ones that are typically maintained."

Flares, booster cables and extra boots are always a good idea as well.
