A federal court judge has ruled in favour of the Canadian Wheat Board and has determined the Harper Government must take barley changes through parliament.

A federal court justice has ruled the federal government erred in trying to remove barley from the Canadian Wheat Board’s single desk via regulation.

In her decision released Tuesday, Madam Justice Dolores Hansen stated the change could not be made without parliamentary approval.

CWB Chairperson Ken Ritter says with the ruling the single desk for barley will remain intact, but it will not be business as usual.

He adds board will accelerate the evolution begun several years ago to transform the corporation into an entity that effectively responds to farmers’ business needs without sacrificing market premiums generated through the power of the single desk.
