With the Speech from the Throne delivered on Wednesday afternoon, Moose Jaw’s MLAs gave their highlights for this upcoming sitting of the legislative assembly.

The speech highlighted how Saskatchewan has had record new investments in the province and will lead the country in economic growth by the end of the year.

For Moose Jaw Wakamow MLA Greg Lawrence, he was happy to hear that the Great Plains Power Station was one of the examples of Saskatchewan’s growing economy.

“For me, it was pointing out the economic breakthrough that Moose Jaw has had with the Great Plains Station being built with more than $110 million in local work that was awarded as part of the process,” Lawrence said.

The new 360-megawatt natural gas plant is currently under construction in Moose Jaw’s Agri-Food Industrial Park and is expected to be in service by 2024. Once completed the power station will provide power to about 360,000 homes in the province.

Lawrence is also looking forward to the provincial government introducing The Disabilities Act. He said he’s been working with a group to bring forward legislation for service dogs, a subject that is near and dear to him.

Meanwhile, Moose Jaw North MLA Tim McLeod focused on the healthcare sector as the Dr. F.H. Wigmore Hospital is in his constituency.

“I think the people of Moose Jaw North can look forward to seeing come to fruition the aggressive goal of performing 97,000 additional surgeries this fiscal year,” McLeod said. “Health care remains top of mind for our government for the people of our province.”

He added that his constituents can look forward to Saskatchewan’s affordability plan which was announced in August and the new Health Human Resources Action Plan which was announced in September.

The Health Human Resource Action Plan likely got lost with the passing of Queen Elizabeth, but it is expected to create 1,000 new healthcare worker positions in Saskatchewan.
