The Moose Jaw Fire Department recently came to acquire some brand new hazardous material equipment thanks to a grant from Enbridge. $9,500 was provided to the department by Enbridge Pipeline Inc as part of their Safe Community Grant. Fire Chief Rod Montgomery explained just what kind of equipment they received:

"We were able to get some monitors for chlorine and ammonia. Plus we were able to get some Class 'A' suits, some stuff for decontamination as well so we can wash down

our equipment and members. That was provided by a grant from Enbridge."

Montgomery was asked why the Fire Department would need equipment like the chlorine and ammonia monitors. "Of course we have all those chemicals in the city of Moose Jaw, so we thought it would be a good fit that we had some of those monitors for our own use if we were going into those areas so we could properly detect the amount of saturation in the air – such as ammonia leaks at packing plants, chlorine at the pools."

While they deal with fires a lot more than chemical leaks, Montgomery said there have been situations in the past where they could have desperately used the new equipment.

"We've had different methods [in the past] to do different monitoring, but we certainly responded to the old Civic Centre, there were times there were ammonia leaks. [And] under the former name of Thunder Creek Pork we did respond there as well to an ammonia leak."

Chief Montgomery said they are very thankful for the grant, and that Enbridge has always been a great corporate citizen – helping the smaller departments.
