The Moose Jaw Minor Girls Fastball League has been growing over the past few years and they need more room to grow.

The league has undertaken the project of refurbishing the diamonds behind the Western Development Museum to give them more options for games.

"We recognized over the winter that we could use more space and more suitable space for not only games, but practices," said Craig Hemingway with the MJMGFL. "The past few years, a number of our teams, and our Ice competitive teams have used those diamonds for practices, but really could only use the infield because the outfield was littered with gopher holes."

Since the snow has melt, members of the league, the City of Moose Jaw and a number of local businesses, including Strictly Fences, Ottawa Real Estate, HD Drake Builders, Babich Farms, Westrum Lumber, Home Hardware and Castle Building Centre, have been out working to fill holes in the outfield and replace fencing for the fields to make sure they're ready for the start of the season this month.

"The dugouts are just about built, we've got a crew heading there this weekend to fill in some of the holes in the outfield and we've had help from the City in terms of dealing with pest control up there with the gophers and the wiring will all be fixed," said Hemingway.

There's been an uptick in local registration for the league this season as compared to last year, there's 30 more kids registered locally with 307 Moose Jaw kids registered in total. Out-of-town teams continue to come into the league as well.

"With those extra teams, extra kids, you need more space for them to go and not only for the league play, but once these diamonds are up and ready, it will allow for us to hold larger tournaments,"` said Hemingway.

Ball season is just about here as the league will kick things off on Monday night with the opening ceremonies happening at Optimist Park on South Hill at 5:30 p.m. and the first games of the year to follow. The first games at the WDM Diamonds will happen the following week.
