Everything lined up perfectly for Moose Jaw's Dax Whitehead this past weekend. Whitehead was able to break the ACAC men's volleyball record for most kills in front of family and friends on Saturday out in Caronport.

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks athlete blasted down the 1,109th kill of his ACAC career to set the new mark in his hometown game against the Briercrest College Clippers.

"It felt really good, it was almost relieving because I wanted to do it when we were in Briercrest because my family is there, my friends are there and it's pretty much where I'm from, so I put a little bit of pressure on myself and when I finally did it, it was joy and relief too," said Whitehead.

"To look up and see my parents, my sister, my grandparents, my mom's friends and some friends from high school, to do it in front of them made it really special."

Whitehead entered the weekend sitting 21 kills away from tying the record and he was able to register 11 in each game against the Clippers over the weekend.

The record-setting kill came during the Kodiaks' 25-19 win in the third set to sweep Briercrest.

"Depending on how the first night went, I knew I'd get either on Saturday or this coming Thursday and I had a good first night, so it made the second night even easier," said Whitehead.

Whitehead is in his third season with Lethbridge College and he said he's living a dream in becoming the potent killer in ACAC history.

"I am where I am right now because of my team, I couldn't have done this on my own, this is a team sport and I'm very grateful for the guys around that have pushed me to get where I am," said Whitehead.

"After I finished my diploma, I wanted to stick around a bit more because I felt that volleyball was unfinished, so obviously a personal goal of the record is amazing, but really the main goal is to come home with a provincial and/or a national medal too."

The Kodiaks are well on their way to competing for a national championship as they currently sit ranked second in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Top-10. They've posted an 18-0 record so far this season in ACAC play.

"We're having fun, we have the same team as last year so we have that chemistry and we're not worrying whether we win or lose, we're just going out there and playing our game and it's helping us in the end," said Whitehead.

"If we just keep playing the way we're playing, keep working hard in practice, I'm sure a medal will be in our hands."

Whitehead and the Kodiaks will face the Ambrose College Lions in games on Thursday and Saturday this week.

As for the Clippers, the Briercrest women's team is ranked fifth in the country as they lead the ACAC South Division with a 16-2 record. The Clippers men's team is 7-11 after losing twice to the Kodiaks last weekend.

Both teams will be at Olds College for games against the Broncos on Friday and Saturday.
